Definitive history of the Victorian railway engineer and his 15” gauge
railways. Heywood conceived the idea of 15" as the minimum gauge for
serious railway operation, and devoted much of his life to promoting the
concept. Includes full description of Heywood’s railways at Dove Leys,
Duffield Bank and Eaton Hall, plus notes on other railways (notably the
Ravenglass and Eskdale) which his work influenced. The book includes full
details of both locomotives and rolling stock.

Much of this book is concerned with the 15in gauge railways pioneered by Sir Arthur Heywood in the last quarter of the 19th century. Featured is the 15in Fairbourne, Ravenglass & Eskdale, Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railways. The Sand Hutton Railway started life as a 15in miniature line only to be converted later to 18in narrow gauge. Also features the 2ft narrow gauge railways of the reservoir construction railway at Colsterdale, the Harrogate Gas Company and the Lynton & Barnstable.
