November 2008Visit the website of the Tauranga Model Marine & Engineering Club at: www.tmmec.bravehost.com I visited the Tauranga club for their open weekend in November 2008. The track runs around a fairly flat park adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth Youth (recreation) Centre, so the track is not very demanding but it is beautifully maintained. We were hoping that Alan Ure would bring his 2-8-2 logging-style loco (see: Auckland Society of Model Engineers) but he couldn't make it so John Bremner and I went on our own. It was a beautiful day but it isn't the same without a loco to drive. Roll-on getting POEM back on the track! There were a number of locos there I'd not seen before including David Giles' Shay but I think the highlight of my day was Tony Mackay's South African Railways 19D 2-8-2. This is "only" a 5" gauge loco but it is about the same size as a British-outline 7¼" gauge loco because the prototype is 3' 6" gauge. Tony took 20 years to complete the loco working only from original North British Locomotive Company builder's plans. The finish on the loco is superb and though he admits he had to do a lot of tinkering when she was first completed (mainly due to poor steaming), John and I had several "spirited" runs round the track behind her and she now runs like a dream. There was also a very nice NZR C-class and a L'il LIMA which had come all the way from Hastings.
Nice tree!
