I visited the Havelock North Live Steamers at their track in Keirunga Park over the New Year 2009 holidays. I have to say that I thought it was a superb track and ranks amongst the best that I have seen. I have seen more immaculate lines (The Beer Heights Light Railway springs to mind), but for sheer civil engineering, Keirunga Park is second to none.

The park is on the side of a hill and the track has been built using a number of bridges and tunnels in order to maintain a reasonable gradient. Apparently it took five years from the cutting of the first sod to running the first train.

I was made to feel really at home and they said they'd welcome me and POEM at any time. I can thoroughly recommend a visit to this track.

This trestle is the first bridge you cross after leaving the station

Coming back in to the station are two modern, poured concrete bridges

To give an idea of the terrain, this is the loco lift from the car-park up to track level
